Jane’s Story: Rebuilding a Cathedral

How a Community Can Restore Hope, One Brick at a Time

A Little Girl Full of Dreams

When I first met Jane, she was only five years old.

She would come to my clinic with her mother and siblings. She was full of laughter, curiosity, and endless questions. Life was an adventure. She dreamed big, smiled often, and believed the world was full of possibilities.

When Jane turned seven, we celebrated her birthday in the back parking lot of the clinic. Looking back at those pictures today, I can still see the joy on her face. We played games, laughed together, and even learned a few cheerleading moves. She was surrounded by love, hope, and dreams.

At that moment, it seemed as though her future was filled with endless possibilities.

Life Took an Unexpected Turn

Then life happened, and we lost touch.

Years later, I received a phone call from a probation officer.

“Jane needs help.”

The little girl I remembered had become a young woman facing homelessness. She was carrying the heavy burden of trauma and struggling with her mental health. The child whose future had once seemed so bright was now fighting simply to survive.

A Community Called to Respond

When I hung up the phone, one thought filled my heart:

No one should have to rebuild their life alone.

This wasn’t just Jane’s story—it was our community’s opportunity to respond.

She didn’t need one organization.

She needed a community.

She needed people willing to surround her with hope, restore her dignity, and remind her that her dreams were still worth pursuing.

Rebuilding a Cathedral

At our Alliance meeting, I shared the story of the three bricklayers.

One said, “I am laying bricks.”

Another said, “I am building a wall.”

The third said, “I am building a cathedral.”

Jane’s life could not be rebuilt in a single day. Like a cathedral, it would be rebuilt one brick at a time.

One assessment.

One trusted relationship.

One safe place to stay.

One counseling session.

One employment opportunity.

One act of encouragement.

One answered prayer.

One victory after another.

Every church, nonprofit, government agency, healthcare provider, business, and volunteer who walked alongside Jane brought another brick to the construction site.

Together, we began rebuilding what trauma had tried to destroy.

Hope Is Rising Again

Today, I am grateful to share that Jane is on her way to rebuilding her cathedral.

Her story reminds us that every child is born with hopes and dreams. Sometimes those dreams become buried beneath trauma, homelessness, poverty, or hardship—but they are not lost.

When a community chooses collaboration over isolation and collective impact over individual effort, lives can be rebuilt.

Brick by brick.

Layer by layer.

Life by life.

Because no one builds a cathedral alone.
