When a single parent with six children was referred to the 100 Families Initiative, the family had already endured months of housing instability. Since July, they had been moving between extended family members’ homes—grateful for temporary shelter, yet without the security every family needs to thrive.
Despite the instability, the parent remained employed full-time and was doing everything possible to secure permanent housing. The family held an active Section 8 voucher, but with the expiration date approaching, time was not on their side.
Navigating a Fragile System
Working alongside a Section 8 caseworker, the family pursued multiple housing options. Several promising units required repairs or failed to meet inspection standards, delaying progress. Then, just as momentum was building, a landlord unexpectedly withdrew—despite the security deposit and first month’s rent already being secured through a partner agency.
For many families, this is where hope begins to fade.
But this family stayed
engaged.
Persistence, Partnership, and a Breakthrough
With continued advocacy and coordinated communication among partners, additional properties were identified. After further viewings, the family found a unit that met program requirements. The property passed both city and Section 8 inspections, clearing the final barriers.
Through a combination of community support and a financial contribution from the family, the lease was finalized, keys were secured, and the family moved into their new home.

Today, this family of seven is fully housed and beginning the process of stabilizing—re-establishing routines, regaining a sense of safety, and building toward long-term security.
